Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 1/3 cup flour
- 3 1/4 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Egg Mixture
- 6 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup diced red pepper
Casserole Base and Topping
- 1 16.3-ounce tube biscuits (8 count)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350℉ and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown and crumble the ground breakfast sausage until fully cooked through.
- Make Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage, stir well, and cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Add Milk and Seasonings: Slowly pour in the 3 1/4 cups milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add black pepper, salt, and red pepper flakes and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches a boil and thickens. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Scramble Eggs: In a large microwave-safe bowl, whisk together the eggs, 1/4 cup milk, and diced red pepper. Pour this mixture into a hot skillet and scramble over medium heat until fully cooked. Remove from heat.
- Prepare Biscuit Layer: Open the tube of biscuits and cut each biscuit into 8 pieces. Spread the biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Assemble Casserole: Layer the scrambled eggs evenly over the biscuit pieces, then pour the sausage gravy over the eggs. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake Covered and Uncovered: Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes to allow the biscuits to cook through. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes to brown the top and melt the cheese.
Notes
- This casserole is a perfect make-ahead breakfast that will satisfy the whole family.
- Using store-bought biscuit dough saves time and effort but you can substitute with homemade biscuit dough if preferred.
- Red pepper flakes add a subtle heat but can be omitted if you prefer a milder flavor.
- Use freshly shredded cheddar cheese for better melting and flavor.
- Make sure to cover the dish during the first baking phase to ensure biscuits cook thoroughly without drying out.
